A Mobile County grand jury cleared police of criminal wrongdoing in the death of Jawan Dallas.

Dallas, 36, died on July 2 after being Tased twice by police who were trying to subdue him. Police were responding to a residential burglary when they encountered Dallas.

Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood this morning announced the results of the grand jury’s findings.

“A Mobile County Grand Jury has conducted a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jawan Dallas,” Blackwood said in a statement. “Upon a thorough review of the facts of this case, and applying the law to those facts, the November 2023 Grand Jury found that the responding officers were not criminally liable for the death of Jawan Dallas. I reached out to the Dallas family this morning to let them know of the Grand Jury’s decision. Additionally, a formal letter was sent to Rob Lasky, Executive Director of Public Safety at the City of Mobile to notify him as well.”

Dallas’ family has sought more information about the incident from Mobile officials – repeatedly asking to see the police officers’ body camera footage of the incident – but have not been allowed to see it. The district attorney’s office said in September it will turn over the footage to Dallas’ family following the grand jury’s work.

The city of Mobile has also declined to turn over documents about the case to AL.com that were requested under the Alabama Open Records Act.

The police officers involved in the incident have returned to work. Their names have not been released.
